People: Gail Swanlund

Gail Swanlund is a text + image designer and somnambulist living in Hollywood. Currently on faculty at UCLA and CalArts and principal in studio "n.i.c.e.", a very nice studio that frequently works in collaboration with the City of Angels' brave and stalwart writers and artists. Professional experience includes work as writer and designer for Emigre, an internationally-recognized type foundry and journal dealing with graphic design in a theoretical and experimental context; art direction and design of Snowflake, Utne Reader, ArtPaper, RealLife Magazine; and work in the music and film industry.

Snowflake. Art by Benjamin Weissman, Paul McCarthy, and Lisa Anne Auerbach

Her work is profiled in soon-to-be-released Radical Graphics; as well as featured in Typography Now Two; The Graphic Edge; The Best of Experimental Typography One; American TypePlay; Maximum Message, Minimum Means; Magazines Inside and Out; That's Entertainment: The Graphics of Showbiz; and Icons: Magnets of Meaning.

Her work has recently been exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and is included the permanent collection of SF MOMA and the Cooper Hewitt Museum.

She struggles with finding a place in the professional practice of design where one need not sacrifice esthetics, vision nor sleep.
